Round 9: Rabbitohs vs Storm

Well well well here we are it’s that time again where we meet a massive arch rival the Storm. As we all know they’re a bogey side for us and no one has a worse record against anyone than we do against the Storm. Good thing this week is it’s on our home turf where we have beaten them before! Being a Thursday Night will probs mean it’s only quite a small crowd but I know all the diehard Souths members will be out there! I certainly will be.

Looking at the last month

Well for Souths we’ve had a very strong last 7 weeks and quite a strong last 4 games. We defeated Brisbane 35-6, defeated West’s Tigers 18-14 in an insane nail biter, defeated Titans in a comeback win 40-30 and defeated Raiders 34-20. The last few weeks we have played teams who have been coming off big losses so we’ve been challenged in every one of those games. Our defence has been a bit off the last couple of weeks and I feel our overall contact in defence has slipped and it’s not quite where it needs to be. The great thing is our attack has been great and we are creating lots of opportunities to keep racking the points up.

Looking at the Storm the last month they have had a 52-18 win over the Dogs, 20-4 win over the Rorters, 42-20 win over the Warriors and 40-14 win over the Sharks. They’ve really found their mojo the Storm in the last month and their attack is on song. Like us though the last couple of weeks they wouldn’t be happy with some of the tries they’ve been letting in so they’ll be looking to fix that.

Last time we met

Well how could we forget… it was Round 1 of this season. We just didn’t come out of the blocks and they were up 22-0 before we could blink. We were quite lethargic and had a poor completion rate the first half making crucial errors which just invited the Storm to hammer us. They also spread the ball early several times and found space on our edges! In the second half we got it back on our terms more so as we held the ball and made plenty of metres in the middle creating opportunities for us to get right back into it. Ultimately we had too much to do and a couple of 50/50 reffing decisions went against us plus an error or 2 which just meant we couldn’t bring the W home and our hoodoo down there continued!

Team News

Well for us we’ve been hit hard with injuries/suspensions and we are likely to be without all of Trell, Mansour, Campbell, Paulo, Moga, Reyno, Ta’affe, Murray and J. Cartwright… so the injuries are starting to mount up and our depth is about to get tested. I would expect Reyno to be named but don’t expect him to play. Marsters and Burns are likely to come into the centres for us and Hawkins into halfback with Arrow to lock.

For the Storm they’re getting NAS and G. Jennings back and there is a fair chance they will have Pap back as well. So the Storm are pretty much at full strength.

Keys to the game and getting the win

For us I just wanna see us dig deep and put in a big effort. That starts with our forward pack aiming up right from the start and getting into the Storm early. We simply can’t start how we have the last few weeks. Yes Murray is a big out but we have enough there to still get the job done. The next thing is our completion rate we simply can’t afford any cheap errors like the last time we played them. We also need to be disciplined not giving any cheap penalties or 6 agains away! Having a good kicking game as well will be important so even if Reyno is out Benji and Hawkins are very capable and can’t afford to kick down the Storms backs throats or kick it dead giving them 7 tackles. Our left edge once again is where I feel we can score some points and I see a vulnerability in the Storm down their right side defence. We also need Cookie to get into the game so need to find a way to try get some fast play the balls. If that can’t happen then Cookie will have to focus on making sure he’s giving good service with every pass on the money. For our outside backs we just need them to hang in there and all we can ask the guts coming in to do a job is that they do their best and work hard to scramble for one another. Another big key is stopping the offloads. We simply
can’t let the Storm offload at will as they’ll hammer us. They have threats all over the park but we will have to try and shut down Munster somehow which never seem to be able to do and also shut down Pap and Grant. Another big key is not giving Addo Carr any space or time. Hughes is another one you have to watch like a hawk!

Great write-up, Rabbits21!

I’m actually coming around to the view that we are going to go better on Thursday than most expect. Yes we have a few players out, and yes our record against this mob isn’t real flash. But while they’ve been racking up some big scores against some of the also-rans, like us they haven’t really been tested much against the elite teams in recent weeks, and they had losses to Penrith and Parra early in the season. This Storm team, while well-drilled as always, doesn’t seem to be quite the crack outfit of 2020, and if Papenhuyzen is out, they lose quite a lot of strike power.

Our injury woes have been well-documented, but we still boast a team with several internationals and Origin stars, and if we win the forward battle, I think we still have enough points from the likes of Cook, Cody, Benji, Gags and AJ to win this match.

Mighty Rabbitohs by 6.

Extremely difficult task against the benchmark and premiers.

Their defensive line speed is second to none and with our outs I think they’ll simply smother us.

Then there’s that man Munster who we all know so well.

Would gladly take a respectable loss here, but it could get uglier.

We need to contain that grub Kafusi and if possible smash him. He rates highly amongst Gallen and JWH as the most lowest forms of grubs that ever played the game. Their intent is to injure and mame at all cost. What really baffles me is that they get away with it.

Great write up Rabbits21 and full of enthusiasm, just gotta hope that the players approach this game with the same attitude.
Do I think we’ll win this match ?..sadly no. We tend to go into these Storm matches like deer’s in the headlights and invariably miss the start so to speak. With them practically at full strength and us having forced changes to the line up it will take a Herculean effort to get the points.
I’d love to be proved wrong and of course will be there with the Rabbitoh faurhful in bay 131 hoping that we can defy the odds and record one of those memorable wins.

Played on a probably wet track with 10-20mm predicted tomorrow and 6-10mm on game day.

Melbourne just have too much for us with so many players out.

I reckon we will fight hard, but they will be too strong late in the piece.

Storm by 10-12.

If Reynolds plays his kicking game can get us home in wet weather.

The rain might help us?

I’m not sure.

We have attacked our way out of trouble pretty much all season.

New halves combo and a wet track… Don’t think that helps.

The Storm get down and dirty with the best of them - the rain probably suits them more than us I’d think, but it will be interesting.

Love the song. Well done. Wish I could write! I’ll have to give it a go one day. Storm will be too good but it will test out our character and see if we have the ‘mental toughness’ to compete in the dirt. One of the most famous victories happened in 1968. We had half a team out and Lurch slashed his leg open. He got it stitched up and still played. We were playing Balmain and everybody laughed at our chances. We won and went onto win the GF. Balmain was humiliated.

We need to be at full strength, or very close to it, to beat the Storm IMO, so I am not holding out any thoughts of us coming up with a win this week.

So for me, the most important thing we need to take away from this game is something we don’t want to take away, & that is one single injury bar the standard bumps & bruises.

We will likely run into the Storm again at the pointy end of the season and that is where a win will be far more important.

We can’t even beat the storm at full strength it’s all in the players minds. We are no chance on Thursday.

If The Storm are thinking this game is in the bag they may be a little complacent allowing a more even contest. I remember the good Manly sides about 10 years ago had some ordinary games against us, which we won. However, having said, under Bellamy there’s no chance The Storm will take this game lightly…

Awful team Milne wing WTF

The Million dollar question will Burns last 80mins

Unlikely, nor would I expect him to.

If if wasn’t for so many backs unavailable this week he would going around in Reggie’s again.

Backs to the wall stuff, this is the sort of game an NRL player should look forward to. I expect a good showing on our home turf!

Good read Rabbits 21.

Disappointing we have a few players out for this game which may work in our favour that Melbourne might not be as fully focussed and think they only have to go through the motions…

They have big forwards that can get offloads away and a smart dummy half in Harry Grant and of course if the game gets close they give to Munster mash who invariably breaks as we seen in Gosford a couple of years ago and of course down at our hoodoo ground in Melbourne.

The good thing no Papenhauzin and we are playing at homebush.

They can run up a score in no time if our defence is ordinary on our line like it has been the last couple of weeks.

Souths forwards are capable of offloading to and we would do well if we can score our tries near the posts without a recognised goal kicker.

Hope Souths make up for the last two games and play out of their skins.

It all points to Melbourne to win though.
