The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce that Papua New Guinean and Australian international Alex Johnston has re-signed with the Club until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Johnston, 25, is a South Sydney junior from the La Perouse Panthers club, moving through the junior representative grades to play 138 NRL games for the Rabbitohs since making his debut in 2014, scoring 97 tries.

Alex, Rabbitohs first grade player number 1105, has gone on to represent Papua New Guinea and Australia at international level, the Indigenous All Stars on three occasions, as well as playing in the 2014 NRL Grand Final which saw South Sydney break a 43-year premiership drought.

Head of Football Mark Ellison with Alex Johnston

Rabbitohs Head of Football, Mark Ellison, said the Club has worked hard to retain Johnston’s services for a further two years.

“Alex is a very important member of our team and we’re very happy that we’ve been able to come to an agreement with him to stay on for at least another two seasons,” Mr Ellison said.

“Alex is a Souths junior, a potent try scorer, and has been a mainstay of our backline for a number of seasons, be it on the wing or at fullback.

I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years and playing with this group of men we have here at Souths.

Alex Johnston

“We’re all very happy that we’ve been able to secure Alex to stay with the Club he loves. We’re looking forward to seeing him break through the 100-try mark very shortly as we head towards the Finals.”

Johnston is very happy to have his future decided for at least the next two years.

“Firstly I would like to thank all of the Members and fans for their support. It’s been overwhelming to be honest,” Johnston said.

“I’m absolutely stoked to be staying and continuing my dream of being a one-club man.

“I’m relieved to finally have my contract sorted so I can now just concentrate on footy and scoring more tries.

“I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years and playing with this group of men we have here at Souths.

“There are exciting times ahead and we’ll keep working hard towards winning that 22nd premiership for South Sydney.”

Forget he’s only 25

Great news.
Has made my day.

Me too he’s been around for ages always think he’s pushing 30

Media been talking about him like he is old and slow.

Freddy and Joey on their show keep talking about how he “still has his speed” like he is older than BMoz. LOL makes me laugh every time.

This is fantastic news.

Local product.

Phenomenal Winger.

Bleeds Red and Green.

Most pleasing part is we didn’t break the bank to keep him he was happy to stay for less.

Great news, and in my opinion a well-handled negotiation by the club too.

Am really pleased with this. But I think most credit must go to AJ. A significant number of players would have walked. I don’t know the ins-ands-outs of his dealings, but you would assume he had some very decent offers on the table from other clubs.

This will turn out to be one of the most important signings Souths have done.

Coming up to the business end of the season a happy and united team is a must. AJ is a really nice bloke and forget his football abilities he’s a respected member of the team who everyone likes being around.

Congrats AJ and well done Souths this will be part of the story that will take us to 22 this year.

AJ is very popular amongst his team mates.

Fan bloody tastic.

Have never doubted his love and passion for the Bunnies. It is obvious also that he is very well liked by his teammates. This can only add the the culture we are building.

I have expressed my feelings on the areas he needs to improve. I hope he takes his game to the next level. He is now a Bunny for 2 more years and so he has my total support.

AJ just wouldn’t look right in purple.

Yes…only 19 on that memorable October night in 2014.

Great news.

A big thumbs up for not paying overs and still getting the player.

Well done Ello.
