Every NRL club’s best all-time under 20s squad

Sporting News Australia delves into the history books and determines every club’s best ever under 20s squad

Written BySPORTING NEWS @sportingnewsau

After a decade of captivating, defenceless football, the NRL pulled the plug on the NYC competition in favour of two state-based under 20s competitions.

The lower grade was a breeding ground for talent, acting as a stepping stone for almost every player who made their debut between 2008 and 2017.

We all know how good the Warriors were (the only thing they can win), and the Panthers weren’t trailing too far behind. But which team can say they developed the best crop of players?

I’m sure Luke Keary played U/20s.

The glaring omission, first thing I noticed

He did, how in the universe does anyone have Sandow ahead of Keary lol.

Not to mention none of our premiership winning side from last year getting a run.

Api way ahead of Peats.
Takairangi played in the centres, not forwards.
Sandow never played 5/8 and agree Keary would be among first chosen.
Did Tom play U20s? If so, put him ahead of Musgrove. If not, I would have Starling there instead.

George played NYC

As an U20s player Sandow was one of the best players in the comp, actually I think he won the player of the year? Jointly perhaps?

Who would have Aaron Gray over Campbell Graham?

He was very good in u20s, but he only played like a dozen games for us there before being promoted. If he won player of the year it must have been at the Gold Coast.

Tom didn’t play u20s here he played a couple of seasons for Bradford before jumping straight into our top grade.

I just don’t rate Mansour, never have.

He was in the team of the year, the two best halves were him & Ben Barba

Sandow made halfback of the year & Barba 5/8th
And as you said, he got called up to first grade so didn’t play a full season
I think how good he was & how good he was for us gets downplayed a fair bit, people like to focus on his later career when he put the pounds on & had some indiscretions

Not sure if it’s ranking them as U20s players or how they turned out, what they achieved

Two of the best for that age at that time from Souths were Junior Vai Vai & Dylan Farrell

Definitely what they’ve achieved, I remember reading Cook was cut from Penrith.

I agree with this, but he wasn’t better for us in either grade than Keary was.

I think Taaffe was better than them both at u20s level.

If it’s based on only u20s performance, then you’d think someone from our premiership winning side would make the team.

I think he was equally as good in U20s, he was considered one of the stars of the comp
We all know how good Keary has become & when we won the comp etc
But without hindsight I can’t say Keary was any better
And even in the top grade Sandow still performed better than average, a lot of people were pissed off when he left, there was all kinds of panic on the forums because the only half we had was an unknown kid by the name of Reynolds who’d just come back from a knee reconstruction, plenty of people were hoping we’d sign an experienced half

I remember this time well.

I first joined the Warren when GI was about to sign but didn’t start posting until everyone was freaking out that we were losing Sandow.

Reynolds was the first player I gave my seal of approval to.

You’re right that people have jaded views of how good Sandow was for us, but Keary was undoubtedly better for us at both levels. Taaffe was better than them both at u20s level.

Our best U20s will be dominated by our 2010 and 2019 teams

Good team but Malaita didn’t play that much to deserve selection. I thought he had one good season (his last one) but even then he was often not selected and always came off the bench. Koala was so much better that year also.
